| The Good | The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. For the first several months of the release of the first book, Twilight, I simply refused to go get it. Vampires and fantasy wasn’t really my gig. But when I heard that ALL, and I mean ALL, of my friends had already finished the fourth book I decided to give it a try. These books look HUGE and are about 700+ pages each. Intimidating. But I found myself locked in, completely ignoring the world around me only to see what Bella and the crew were going to do next. She falls a lot and bumps into things, which I found particularly entertaining since I’m that same way. By the end of the fourth book, I was lost and alone and only wanted MORE! |
| The Bad | In the series though, you’ve got Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and then Breaking Dawn. All BIG books,, but pretty easy enough to read even for young adults. My 10-year-old is on book two and is hooked. Book 2, New Moon, was the hardest to get through. I think part of that is because I compared it to book 1 which had me hook, line and sinker, from beginning to end. Then you get to the hum-drum not so much fun to read book 2. It’s a challenge to get through but with all you learn, it’s important to read it so you can follow through with the next two. |
| The Ugly | The only thing I really didn’t care for (even though I’m not a fan of vampires) was the writing style. I’m picky about what I read, and this series seemed very repetitive… it was almost like the writer was speaking to a child. I KNOW his eyes are black, you’ve said it a million times. I KNOW Bella loves Jacob but isn’t “in love” with him, you’ve drilled that in my head over and over again. All things considered, I think Meyer was trying to reach too wide a scope of readers. If you want a teen series, make it be so; if you want an adult series, make it be so… but to combine them only makes it harder for the more experienced reader to get through. This may not be a big factor to a lot of folks, I’m just very critical of writing style. The content of the Twilight series was amazing! |
