First things first, this sucker is super ugly. Imagine cutting out two large number fives and taping them on your ears. Thankfully, the Portapro now comes in all black because no one should look like they have blue gills for ears. The metal headband works with two sliders to increase or decrease size, but they pinch at your hairs. Putting the headphones is a chore and will make them creak and groan. When I first got them, they where annoying enough to put on that if I needed to move away from the audio source I would rather unplug them than take them off. I can understand adjusting sound equalizers to get the best sound for your headphones, but putting them on shouldn't have a learning curve. The unique point in the Portapro's design is the Comfort Zone pads that rest on your temples to alleviate pressure on the ears. There is a slider on each side to choose from three pressure settings for personal comfort- - unfortunately, you need to take them off to switch to firm and put them on to switch to light making it pretty inconvenient. The way it works is it changes the angle of the earpads to the temple pads so it needs pressure to move out and free range to move in. Once you figure out your preference and how to put the headphones on, they are really quiet comfortable. The Portapro's are very lightweight and the foam pads don't trap in heat. Another appreciated feature is the cloth covered cord on its updated models. The 4 ft long cord feels very durable and less prone to tangling compared to regular rubbery types. Sound is where the Portapro shines; and for headphones, nothing else should matter right? (no, they are still super ugly). The set offer a good range with a frequency response of 15-25,000 Hz. The sound is very engaging and fun to listen to. Vocals sound life like while instruments have good spacial separation. These headphones have a lot of bass for its size without being too sloppy. Overall, it gives your music that extra oomph a neutral set wont (like the Sennheiser PX100). The Koss Portapro is a classic, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009 with a nicer looking (albeit same design) paint job and cloth cord. While the special edition is a little pricier, the standard versions represent a great value. For around $40, you can buy the new all black version with cloth cord in most big box electronics retailers. The Portapro has a huge following online also with many people considering it the best sub-$100 headphones available. If you are a fan of hip-hop, rock, or pop music, these may be for you. Wear them in secret at home, or rock them as a retro prop out and about, but don't say I didn't warn you. note: these headphones are of the open-back design, meaning they will not provide isolation. If you plan on wearing them on the bus, or even in an office environment, you might be better off with a closed pair like the Sennheiser PX200 II. |
