I have been a long time fan of Sennheiser's line of portable headphones. Having owned both the PX100 and PX200, I was excited to hear they were updating these models . After a few months of waiting for them to become available, I picked up a pair of the PX200 II since I gave my original away. The updated model denoted with the "II", are a lot more comfortable for starters. The cushions on the earpad are bigger, softer, and generally sits on the ear better. Build quality is also beefed up with the head-band being thicker and earcup pivot points made of metal now instead of plastic. The headphones are still collapsible to a convenient travel size, but instead of fitting into a hardcase, they go into an included nylon pouch. Basically, the added protection is traded for convenience -- which isn't a bad thing. The only real gripe I have with the design is the cable. The 3 feet 8 inches cable feels too short at times, and the useful inline volume control is at an awkward position. The volume dial is a foot down from headphone so it falls at about chest level. This means its hard to find a place to clip the thing, and if you do you will most likely be sacrificing the rest of the length. However, these short comings are not deal breaking and can easily be remedied with an extension cable. Sound quality is very impressive for such a small pair of headphones; actually its impressive compared to some more expensive full sized ones as well. Customers interested in the PX200 II might also consider Bose's Triport OE or Monster's Beats Solo by Dre. Among these three travel friendly and design conscious headphones, the Sennheiser's offer better sound quality and value. The highs and mids on the PX200 II very well defined. Vocals sound natural and powerful among instrumentals. The bass in this set is improved compared to the PX200. From hip hop to acoustic music, low ends are tight and satisfying. Unlike the offerings from Bose and Monster, which tend to be bass heavy (to the headache inducing point), the Sennheiser's are not fatiguing for extended listening. For the size, the PX200 II offer a surprisingly spacious sound; another improvement over its predecessor. The closed driver design also provide passive noise reduction for environments that require such things. Overall, the PX200 II is a great travel friendly pair of headphones. For movies and music, these headphones will impress most users with a taste for high quality sound. As an added bonus, they can be found in black or white for about half the price of its competitors. |
