I finally got an American Express card after my Bank of America and Citi card rates skyrocketed to over 25%. Signing up for the card was easy and I was instantly approved (I have almost zero credit liabilities). I received the card in the mail in about a week. Activation was simple, and the representative on the other end of the phone was extremely helpful in (re)explaining all of the benefits to me. The initial point bonus was 10,000 points, which is good for about $100 in gift cards/certs. The first year annual fee was waived for me. I love this card to death. I earn 3x points on air travel, 2x on gas and groceries, and 1 point for other selected entities. Since I purchase rental cars often, I can safely decline the renter's insurance since my American Express Gold Premier picks up the collision damage for me. That's definitely an added bonus since most rental companies charge up to $25/day for the coverage. Also, there's a $50 road-side assistance option so I don't need AAA. Overall, the card is excellent, the website is extremely user friendly when making payments, card is secure from fraud, and I would highly recommend it. As stated, the card is not accepted everywhere, but you can definitely rack up tons of points if you travel or purchase gas/groceries. |
