For frugal travelers, Southwest Airlines can't be beat!

User Review

The Good Southwest Airlines, by far, offers the cheapest rates to fly. My family flies from Oklahoma to Florida each summer for vacation, along with my sister and her family who fly from California. I can get my tickets for right around $200 per passenger, and my sister only pays $250. When compared to $400 and up on the other airlines, that’s a huge savings! This leaves more money in our pockets to actually enjoy our vacation. Southwest Airlines offers the standard 14-day and 21-day advance flights, and most of the time a discount for advance purchases. But even for spur of the moment flights I’ve found a substantial rate difference than their competition. I made an unexpected flight to California last summer, booking the flight only 24 hours in advance, and still paid under $250, while the prices on the other airlines were over $500! Complete no-brainer!
The Bad The thing I didn’t like was no assigned seats. You get a seating call section of A, B or C; and if you manage to get in A, you’re crew will be seated first on the plane. You can check-in online 24-hours prior to departure to get the best seating call. So it’s best to be right at the 24 hour mark, or else you’ll be last in line. They also don’t offer meals on their flights and their destinations are limited.
The Ugly Southwest Airlines planes are crowded and it feels like you’re being squeezed into a can of sardines, especially for travelers who aren’t 130 pounds or less. You get what you pay for, as the saying goes. And for $250 or less, you can’t expect a king size cabin with all the amenities of first class. And if you’re the lucky one who is seated next to the screaming toddler, you’ll soon realize there’s no escape.
